Say “California High-Speed Rail” at a backyard BBQ and you get two reactions: half the table will collectively let out a long, long sigh.

The other half will spend the rest of gathering repeating each other over and over. “Can you believe they haven’t even laid tracks yet!?” “I know, they’ll never get it done!” “I know! What a waste of money.” “I know. I mean, I didn’t vote for it!” “I know, me neither. They’re never gonna get it done.” “I know, can you believe they haven’t even laid any track yet?” …

Meanwhile, the same crowd gladly funds a trillion-dollar highway habit and hops $100 puddle-jump flights because “driving is freedom” and “planes are faster.” Time for a reality check.

1. Follow the money

• Highways: California shells out ≈ $20-23 billion every single year on roads and upkeep. Adjust for inflation and the state has blown ~$1 trillion on blacktop since 1912.

• Airports: A running total of around $200 billion for all the terminal remodels, runway rehabs, and “New T-1” grand openings in the state (in today’s dollars).

• HSR: <$30 billion so far. Even the full San Francisco ⇄ Los Angeles line pencils out at $106-113 billion— a decade of the highway budget.

If cost overruns make you clutch pearls, point that energy at the six-lane-money-shredder.

2. Bang for the buck

*Base-rate compact + taxes + fuel @ $4.90/gal.

HSR lands in the sweet spot: plane-cheap without TSA mingling, car-flexible without wasting time or attention.

3. Speed isn’t everything; it’s the time it takes from door-to-door

• SF ⇄ LA by car: 6-9 hours if I-5 behaves.

• SF ⇄ LA by plane: 1 hour 15 minutes in the air plus ~3 hours curb-to-curb rituals.

• SF ⇄ LA by HSR: 2 hours 40 minutes city-center to city-center. Show up 15 minutes before; keep your shoes on.

Same math crushes LA-SD and Eureka-SD. The shorter the hop, the more airport hassle wrecks the plane’s advantage.

4. “Impossible”? California runs on impossible

Today’s “boondoggle” is tomorrow’s postcard.

5. Proof it works is everywhere but here

• Madrid-Barcelona: Once the world’s busiest air shuttle. After AVE trains went live, rail grabbed 82 % of the market and airlines slashed flights in half.

• Seoul-Busan: KTX cut the 260-mi trip to 2 h 18 m; rail jumped to 66 % share, domestic flyers halved.

• Taipei-Kaohsiung: Island-long HSR opened, the famous air bridge basically died by 2012.

• Wuhan-Guangzhou: Even a 4-hour train stole a third of passengers from the 600-mi flight corridor.

Lesson: give people fast, frequent, downtown-to-downtown service and they’re so in.

6. Carbon, safety, sanity

Drive if you love gripping a wheel in stop-and-go; fly if you enjoy surprise middle seats and confiscated shampoo. Otherwise, the train is cleaner, calmer, and you’ll be able to finish your email without having to threaten your children.

7. Taking it all the way

A hypothetical 765-mile Eureka-to-San Diego train looks absurd—until you price it:

• Plane: two legs, $250, 5-7 hours door-to-door.

• Car rental: ~$675 and twelve espresso-fueled hours.

• HSR: one seat, <5 hours, $177. Watch redwoods slide by at 220 mph and still make happy hour in Gaslamp.

8. The take-home

• California already spends a high-speed-rail-sized fortune every year on roads and no one bats an eye.

• Where HSR exists, it crushes mid-distance planes and claws cars off the highway.

• Our own history—railroads, aqueducts, bridges, BART—shows “can’t be done” usually means “isn’t done yet.”

These giant, gorgeous red brick circles actually serve an important—and quite reassuring—purpose: they’re enormous underground water tanks, and they’re here to save your asphalt the next time things get too fire in this disco.

Let’s dive into our cisterns!

🔥 Born from the ashes

In 1906, the city had a full-blown meltdown—literally. When the earthquake hit, it caused water pipes to burst. Our water system basically ghosted. Hydrants ran dry and The City went up in flames. The devastation must’ve been unimaginable.

However, a few pockets of SF were lucky because some dusty old cisterns—basic but dependable—stepped up and saved the day.

So, in 1908, the city invested in the ultimate backup plan: more cisterns. 170+ of them. Installed under intersections all across town like the Beyoncé of emergency preparedness—ready for anything.

🚒 Wait, WTF is a cistern?

Each cistern is basically a huge underground tank, holding up to 200,000 gallons of water. They are filled to the brim, ready and wading. If the Big One hits and the hydrants flop again, the fire department can just lift the lid and hook up the hose.

🧱 Where are these so-called cisterns?

Check out this map via SF Fire. You can also look for two things at the street level. First, if you find a big red brick circle in the middle of intersection, there is a cistern directly underneath it! Also, keep an eye out for hydrants with green tops—that means there is a cistern underground there even if it’s lost its signature street level brick circle (which happens when a bad contractor repaves the road and does not replace the bricks).

TLDR: SF will continue its goodly weird legacy

San Francisco’s cisterns are the quiet queens of public safety. They don’t brag! They just lie there—moist, massive, and waiting to save your butt if disaster strikes.

🚲 The Hub (formerly Upper Market)

At the crossroads of neighborhoods, transit, and new development, The Hub is about creating a safe but fun way to get around the heart of SF. The Hub is where urban design meets momentum, rising up with bold ideas and bold architecture.

We need to focus on making commutes for residents easier and safer. We also need to show the country what much of the rest of the world already knows: biking and walking to work is good for you—and it can even be fun!

Build protected bike lanes and pedestrian zones along Octavia and connecting streets to tie in with The Wiggle and Market.

Bring Bikes Underground — Install a bike & scooter entrance ramp to a safe, secure, cheap underground storage garage that is connected to Church St. Muni Station—and Safeway if we’re feeling fancy.

Construct two new Muni Metro entrances - Add one at Church between Duboce & Market and the other at Church between Market and 15th. These new entrance points will make transfers from the J, the N and the 22 easier, safer and faster.

Across the board

Beautify sidewalks, alleys and rooftops: TREES! Vertical gardens! Dynamic lighting! Insta-worthy murals! Rooftop gardens! Landscaping and greenery will increase safety, enhance experience and further our sustainability progress.

Introduce a nightlife corridor plan with late-night street cleaning, police presence, and safe, frequent transit access that will encourage tourists to stay out later and make it easier for frontline workers to get around and have some fun of their own!

Market Street doesn’t need to be saved—it needs to be seen for what it has always been: a living, breathing, people-first corridor that reflects San Francisco’s grit, charm, and radical creativity.

By breaking it into distinct zones—each with its own vibe and purpose—we’re not chasing some utopian fantasy. We’re laying the groundwork for a street that actually works: for commuters, residents, small businesses, drag queens, cyclists, tourists, the dog walkers, the scooters, and the dog walkers dodging the scooters. At the end of the day, all the Muni lines are just trying to get us where we’re going — some with flair, some with feelings, and some with inconsistent hygiene practices.

Why? Because street parking has ruined American cities. Installing street EV chargers is just going to prolong this malpractice and threaten the grassroot movement to take back our streets that had finally started to gain some momentum during Covid.

Regardless of the vehicle type, allowing people to store their private vehicles on public streets is absurd. Imagine if residents decided they had an equal right to permanently store sheds, furniture, garbage cans, or random equipment directly outside their homes…

…that looks absurd, right!? The streets would become bottlenecks suffocated by clutter. And yet, that’s exactly what cars parked along curbs effectively do today!

Here’s four reasons why street parking is not just an aesthetic nightmare:

1. Street parking undercuts public transit and sustainability

When cities subsidize parking by giving it away cheaply or for free, driving becomes irresistibly convenient. Removing street parking would nudge people toward better transportation choices—like buses, trains, cycling, and walking.

2. Safety First

Parked cars reduce visibility—especially for children and short people. Between 1990 and 2021, there were 1,502 fatal back-over incidents in the U.S. Removing parking enhances sightlines, reduces accidents, and helps everyone get home in one piece.

3. It's Terrible Urban Economics

Street parking takes up valuable real estate. In cities like San Francisco, the land beneath parked cars could be generating economic activity—housing, retail, outdoor dining—rather than gathering dust under tires.

4. It's Outdated and Unjust

Street parking disproportionately benefits car owners at the expense of everyone else, subsidizing drivers while neglecting those who can't afford a car or choose not to own one.

Here are three ways to use street space better:

1. Outdoor Dining, Street Vendors, and Social Spaces

The pandemic taught us that vibrant outdoor dining spaces add community value and economic vitality. Replacing parked cars with expanded restaurant seating, pedestrian plazas, and communal seating areas can enliven neighborhoods, enhance local businesses, and foster a sense of belonging.

Imagine lively outdoor markets and pop-up retail stalls thriving in spaces once reserved exclusively for empty vehicles. Streets filled with fresh produce stands, local artisans, food trucks, and temporary retail pop-ups create economic opportunities, cultural richness, and vibrant community interactions, breathing new life into neighborhoods.

2. Bike and Transit Lanes

Instead of dedicating streets to idle cars, we could transform these spaces into protected bike lanes or dedicated bus lanes, significantly boosting transportation efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and improving safety. This shift makes active transportation and public transit attractive, reliable options, reducing congestion and pollution in one stroke.

3. Urban Forest Renewal

Cities are flooding and overheating. Replace parking with sidewalk gardens, trees, and permeable pavement, and they become climate tools—not liabilities. They cool the air, soak up storms, and bring life back to the block.

Pocket parks and community gardens grow more than plants—they grow connections. In tight urban spaces, a few reclaimed spots can offer shade, joy, and room to breathe.

It's not that radical—some of the most visited places in the country don’t even allow cars! Reclaiming public streets for public good is a powerful step toward building healthier, happier, and more resilient cities. Ending street parking isn’t about inconveniencing drivers—it’s about choosing smarter, fairer, and more sustainable uses of shared space. It’s time we recognize streets as public resources rather than private conveniences.

Here’s how SF’s dog-friendliness stacks up against the rest of the top 25 most populous U.S. cities:

San Francisco packs a notable number of off-leash areas into its relatively small footprint. Iconic spots like Fort Funston invite dogs to romp in the sand overlooking the Pacific Ocean, while places such as Golden Gate Park and the Presidio offer large swaths of greenery and trails.

Cities like New York or Boston also feature impressive park systems, but SF’s year-round mild weather gives it an edge for daily outdoor adventures, free from scorching summers or harsh winters.

Because land is limited and expensive, some neighborhoods often lack enough designated dog runs. Even so, in SF, you are never more than a 15-minute walk from a good park.

This is where San Francisco stumbles hard.

For owners, the notoriously competitive housing market prices out most folks altogether. Limited inventory makes the search for dog-friendly housing of any kind a serious challenge.

Renters deal with sky-high rents, strict pet policies that often prohibit certain breeds, and higher security deposits and/or monthly rent.

Very important caveat: all landlords must accept dogs who are emotional support animals of any breed without hiking your rent or security deposit.

SF’s ‘cultural openness’ extends to dogs. Many cafés, bars, and workplaces roll out the welcome mat for dogs, some even offering water bowls and treats. There is a seemingly continuous stream of dog-themed festivals, pop-ups, and fundraising events.

While other coastal hubs like LA and Seattle also feature dog-friendly patios and workplaces, SF’s walkability makes it easier to take your pup along with you.

Unlike sprawling cities such as Houston or Dallas, San Francisco’s compact nature and sidewalk infrastructure promote consistent walking opportunities for you and your dog. City blocks are shorter and denser, so errands become efficient dog-walking opportunities.

Many residents rely on public transit, and taking pets on Muni or BART is allowed but requires adherence to (loosely enforced) guidelines. Also, the hilly terrain can sometimes complicate strolls for owners and pets alike.

When it comes to veterinary clinics, specialty pet shops, and doggy daycares, San Francisco is teeming with options. Within the 7x7, you can find everything from 24-hour emergency vet services to mobile groomers to holistic pet spas to dog-only fine dining.

The need to balance dog ownership with ever-rising living costs can create a socioeconomic divide and not every neighborhood has the same resources. There are several partnerships that offer low-cost or free medical care for dogs in need but much more could be done to make basic services consistently available to everyone in need.

San Francisco’s cost of living is among the highest in the nation, and owning a pet here doesn’t make things any cheaper. Vet bills, pet supplies, grooming, and daycare costs add up faster because they are relatively more expensive than in most other places in the country.

There are some subsidized vet clinics and nonprofits providing discounted or free healthcare options but more needs to be done to help low-income residents and elderly residents care for their pets.

Living in any U.S. urban area comes with its own set of safety and cleanliness issues for dog owners. SF is no different in this regard.

Some areas are meticulously maintained, while others may be plagued by litter or insufficient waste stations. Dedicated volunteers and strong community action help maintain cleaner sidewalks and dog-run areas in many neighborhoods, but not all.

Leash-law enforcement is spotty at best. Most owners are good about leashing but you will run into newbies and jerks on occasion.

Why the Overall Rating Falls Short

Overall, SF scored a 6.2 (out of 10 overall) compared with other major U.S. cities—certainly not on top!

• Austin scored an 8 because it couples a vibrant cultural scene with far more affordable housing.

• Seattle scored a 7.4 because it offers similarly dog-friendly businesses and access to nature but sees an affordability gap growing as it expands.

• Denver scored a 7.3 thanks to its abundant parks and active lifestyle, though it, too, has rising housing costs—yet still lower on average than San Francisco’s.

Looking Ahead: Balancing Pros and Cons

While San Francisco’s walkability, concentration of pet amenities, and open-minded community continue to be strong draws for dog owners, the lack of housing affordability and available pet-friendly rentals remains a pressing concern.

Practical everyday realities—like finding a landlord who allows your dog’s breed, coping with expensive vet services, and navigating certain less-clean areas—can make pet ownership in San Francisco feel overwhelming for some.

That said, the city’s leadership and nonprofits have introduced programs like subsidized vet clinics and community-based cleanups aimed at improving conditions.

Potential future efforts—such as incentivizing more pet-friendly rentals and increasing the quality and number of safe off-leash parks—may help raise San Francisco’s dog-friendly standing.

San Francisco knows how to reinvent itself. From gold rushes to tech booms, The City has always made space for what’s next—even when space itself is running out.

Now, with climate change coming in hot (and dry), it might be time we take our food game to new heights—literally.

Why Go Vertical? Because We’ve Got Range

🚛 1. Even Closer is Waymo Better
A large portion of San Francisco’s produce is delivered by truck from several hours away. While that’s relatively local compared to most major U.S. cities, it still burns a lot of fuel, takes a lot of time, and ultimately means the food isn’t as fresh as it could be. With vertical farms in the city, we’re talking zero-mile salads. It’s farm-to-table, minus the bridge & tunnel.

💦 2. Stayin’ Alive… with Less
Hydroponics and vertical farming use a fraction of the resources that traditional farming guzzles:

Climate disasters aren’t going away, and crops don’t do well when skies turn orange. Indoor farms are safe from smoke, pests, and unpredictable weather patterns—which means consistent crops and fewer existential panics per harvest.

Urban farming the old-fashioned way is cute. But, unless you somehow get a permit to plant in Dolores Park (good luck with that, babe), traditional agriculture just doesn’t fit in a city this dense. Vertical farms, on the other hand, can turn warehouses, former office space, and even the sides of high-rises into lush growing towers.

How SF Can Actually Pull This Off

🗺️ 1. Get in The Zone
Right now, you can’t actually legally grow food for sale indoors. So, City Hall has to take a number of actions before anything else can happen:

🍴 2. Turn Empty Buildings into Edible Architecture
We’ve got vacant office towers, garages, and even old retail spots just sitting there. Turn them into stacked farms glowing with LED lights. Commercial vacancy rates will improve and so will access to ultra-fresh, truly organic, economically viable produce.

🤝 3. Keep It Community-Focused
This isn’t about creating high-end basil for $18 sandwiches in Hayes Valley (though, sure). It’s about fresh food access in every corner and pocket of the city. It’s about job training and bringing folks together. It’s about every neighborhood seeing itself in the city’s future.

Picture It...

• The Tendergreens District: Former parking garage, now a leafy vertical oasis, selling sliding-scale produce to the neighborhood.

  

• The Castro Crop Stop: A fabulous little grow-lab right behind the bars, because nothing pairs with a vodka soda like locally-grown mint.

  

• Mission: Possible: School rooftops transformed into safe, year-round learning gardens—because every kid deserves a little green with their education.

The Future Could Be Fruitier

San Francisco doesn’t need to become something new—we just need to keep becoming more of what we are. Innovative. Resilient. Inclusive. Willing to try something different when the old ways aren’t cutting it.

Indoor farming, vertical farming and hydroponics aren’t just smart—they’re so San Francisco. A little quirky, a little ahead of the curve, deeply committed to equity, and always down to find growth and beauty in unexpected places. Come on SF, lettuce do this!

1. Before Humans (Prehistoric Era – before 10,000 BCE)

Long before human presence, the area now known as Ocean Beach was shaped by natural forces over millions of years. Tectonic activity, ocean currents, and wind patterns sculpted the coastline, creating vast sand dunes and a dynamic shoreline. These geological processes established the foundation for the diverse ecosystems that would later flourish in the region.

2. Native American Villages (approx. 10,000 BCE – Late 1700s CE)

For thousands of years, the Ohlone people, specifically the Yelamu group, inhabited the San Francisco Peninsula, including the Ocean Beach area. They established seasonal villages and utilized the rich coastal resources for fishing, hunting, and gathering. The Ohlone maintained a harmonious relationship with the environment, leaving minimal impact on the natural landscape.

3. European Exploration and Early Settlement (Late 1700s – Mid 1800s)

The late 18th century brought Spanish explorers to the region, leading to the establishment of missions and ranchos. Ocean Beach remained largely undeveloped due to its harsh weather conditions and remote location. The area was considered part of the "Outside Lands," a term used to describe the uninhabited western portions of San Francisco.

In this best-case trajectory, Ocean Beach becomes a smaller but smarter ecosystem—redefined not by traffic lanes but by trails, native plants, and flexible design that welcomes both people and nature.

However, if climate action stalls or larger infrastructure decisions lag, Ocean Beach could still face major losses—washed-out roads and sidewalks, disappearing dunes, and a coastline propped up by sandbags and last-minute fixes. Sunset Dunes Park sets a precedent. It shows that retreat doesn’t have to mean failure—it can mean reimagining.
